The 48,000 sq. ft. health center will expand access to care and increase health care training opportunities in Greenbelt.
GREENBELT, MARYLAND, OCTOBER 18, 2024 — Federal, state, and local officials and community members gathered this week to mark a new chapter in health care access in Greenbelt, Maryland. CCI Health Services (CCI), a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) dedicated to increasing equitable access to health care, officially opened a new 48,000 sq. ft. location on Ora Glen Drive.
“I’m immensely proud of what our team has achieved in Greenbelt, creating an innovative space that delivers excellent care respectful of lived experiences while investing in the future of community health in Prince George’s County,” said Dr. Sonya Bruton, CCI’s Chief Executive Officer and President. “Our Ora Glen health center will not just serve as a health care haven for over ten thousand neighbors; it’ll symbolize the power and potential of equitable access for years to come.”
Located on Greenbelt’s Medical Mile, the new health center will offer primary care, dental care, and behavioral health services for patients of all ages. The location will bring the full range of CCI’s services to the community, including pediatric care, prenatal care, preventative medical screenings, dental cleanings and x-rays, vaccinations, and sexual and reproductive health services. For more added convenience, the health center will also include an onsite pharmacy open to patients and the entire community.
As an FQHC, CCI’s locations serve the needs of historically underserved and uninsured or underinsured populations, ensuring anyone can seek quality health care services regardless of ability to pay. The Ora Glen location goes further by serving as a pipeline for health care job training through a unique partnership with Employ Prince George’s. The building will also be the home of the Capital Area Healthcare Career Center (CAHCC). The partnership will jumpstart many area residents’ health care careers in an industry filled with growth opportunities while increasing the pool of health care professionals.
The health center will also serve as Maryland’s first Family Medicine Residency Program self-sponsored by an FQHC. Nearly a third of the U.S. lacks access to primary care physicians; graduate medical education in community health centers addresses the need for more health care homes by training medical residents in an environment where they can learn how health and social drivers directly impact patients. The program also increases the likelihood that residents will practice in historically underserved communities.
“For over 50 years, CCI has been a leading provider of affordable health care for Marylanders of all ages. That’s why we fought to deliver nearly $1 million in direct federal funding to expand their services and close gaps in healthcare access for Prince George’s County residents. Through a new dental clinic, a family medicine residency program to train more doctors in a community health setting, and much more, CCI Ora Glen will play a pivotal role in enhancing Prince Georgians’ equitable access to care,” said Senator Van Hollen, a member of the Appropriations Committee.
The multimillion-dollar project began in 2023 and received federal and state funding. The space boasts 64 exam rooms, 16 dental operatories, five labs, and an area specifically for CenteringPregnancy®. Other features include a classroom, a simulation room for practicing medical procedures, and a training area that fits over 280 people.
Elected officials, including Senator Chris Van Hollen, Representative Glenn Ivey, Jolene Ivey, Chair, County Council, Prince George’s County, and Greenbelt Mayor Emmett Jordan, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony and delivered remarks on the project’s importance to improving local community health.
