CCI Health & Wellness Services Receives American Rescue Plan Funding
Silver Spring, MD– Today, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announced CCI Health & Wellness Services will receive $7.8 million to prevent, mitigate and respond to COVID-19, and enhance health care services and infrastructure. The funding is part of the Biden Administration’s historic $10 billion investment to expand access to vaccines in the hardest-hit communities and is largely funded through the American Rescue Plan.

“We are grateful that the Biden Administration, HRSA, and our Members of Congress recognize the important gains that CCI and other community health centers have made in the equitable distribution of health care,” said Sonya Bruton, PSY.D., MPA, Chief Executive Officer, and President. “Most of our patients do not have the luxury of teleworking or living in single-family households, putting them at greater risk for infection. During this pandemic, we have done what we do best, meeting our patients where they are and partnering with them to keep them as healthy as possible. This funding will fortify our operation and allow us to continue looking after the health of our community.”

According to a recent analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation, community health centers, like CCI, have been instrumental in vaccinating people of color. The non-profit, community-run organizations “appear to be vaccinating people of color at similar or higher rates than their shares of the total population.” Of individuals receiving their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at a community health center, 54 percent are people of color, including 26 percent Hispanic or Latino and 12 percent Black.
At the local level, CCI Health & Wellness Services has vaccinated more than 1,900 individuals in Montgomery County and Prince George’s County since the start of 2021. Nearly 80 percent of the health center’s population identify as a race other than white. CCI was also the first health center in the state of Maryland selected to participate in the White House’s Health Center COVID-19 Vaccine Program.
The health center, which serves 60,000 individuals, has kept its doors open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, adjusting as more information was available to keep patients as healthy as possible.
