SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND, FEBRUARY 5, 2023 – CCI Health Services (CCI), one of the largest and leading Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in Maryland, announced today that Montgomery County has awarded the organization its School Based Wellness Center (SBWC) Program contract.

Beginning in February, CCI will deliver comprehensive health services to students attending Gaithersburg High School, Kennedy High School, Northwood High School, Seneca Valley High School, Watkins Mill High School, and Wheaton High School. More than 12,000 students, including those without health insurance and their siblings, will benefit from the program.

“It’s an honor to partner with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services on the focused needs of teens in our community,” said Dr. Sonya Bruton, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President of CCI. “We are excited to treat, educate, and empower adolescents in ways that support wellness for a lifetime. This is a pivotal moment in our history and a large step forward for health equity in Montgomery County.”

Each SBWC will comprise a team of health professionals adept in CCI’s culturally competent and patient-centered approach to health care, including an overseeing physician, nurse practitioner, medical assistant, and site manager. SBWC personnel will also collaborate with school staff, counselors, and outside professionals to ensure an integrative, quality health experience for students.

Comprehensive primary care services will include well-child exams, sick care, chronic illness management, minor injury treatment, vaccinations for eligible students, and health screenings. Complementing primary care will be a host of supplemental services, including on-site lab testing, prescribing and dispensing medications, dental varnish, and case management. Referrals to external resources will also play a key component.

CCI has delivered care to residents of Montgomery and Prince George’s counties for over five decades. The organization offers service on a sliding scale based on income and will not deny care due to inability to pay. Moreover, CCI delivers services specific to community needs, offering robust refugee health, infectious disease management, prenatal care, and LGBTQIA+ care programs. More than 66,000 patients and WIC participants visited a CCI health center in 2023.
