Halloween Treats for Everyone

It’s fall, and the aisles of your local stores are stocked full of pumpkins, ghouls, and goblins in time for Halloween. Soon, little pirates, witches, princesses, and more will knock at your door, asking you for a sweet treat. As a health care provider, we’ll often tell you to avoid the sugar, but we’re not here to ruin your Halloween fun. Let’s just say moderation is key.

What do we mean by moderation? Well, Halloween is just once a year, and a treat or two that day wouldn’t be terrible. However, you’ll have to be careful not to overindulge after October 31 by limiting your children’s (and your) sugary delights. You might want to avoid sticky, chewy candies—the kind that get stuck between your teeth—and floss before bed for your dental health. If you have a nut or gluten allergy, always check the ingredients before you eat it, as they can sometimes change.

If you’re the neighbor who enjoys handing out treats rather than collecting them, CCI’s Registered Dietician and WIC Nutrition Services Manager, Stephanie Zafiropoulos, shares some great recommendations for treats that are less sugary, nut-safe, and gluten-free.

Nut Free:

  • Utz Halloween Pretzels
  • Goldfish Crackers
  • Utz Halloween Mini Cheese Ball Treats

Gluten and Nut Free:

  • Veggie Chips Ghosts + Bats
  • Pirates Booty
  • Welches Fruit Snacks

Gluten Free:

  • Good Health Monster Shaped Veggie Chips
  • Hershey’s Kisses

Healthier Treats:

  • Clementines
  • Good & Gather Unsweetened Apple Fruit Puree Pouches

Want to stay away from food items altogether? There are many items you can give away that will keep your little neighbors entertained. Consider these fun non-food items:

  • Bubbles
  • Crayons
  • Spider Rings
  • Stickers
  • Temporary Tattoos
  • Bookmarks
  • Mini Pop Its/Fidget toys

Halloween is a great way to get a walk in, meet neighbors, and enjoy your community. Make sure to stay safe. Remember to inspect candy before eating it, watch for cars, carry a flashlight, and don’t wear costumes that limit your vision. If you’re driving, drive slowly and stay alert. Let’s do our part to keep Halloween full of magic and joy!
